Biography
Sovann Pen is a professional counselor, licensed by the state of Oregon. Prior to joining A New Day Counseling, he spent 6 years in private practice counseling and 17 years in sleep medicine. He is passionate about helping others explore and heal from their pasts while discovering purpose and meaning in their lives. He also strives to help individuals overcome challenges, achieve their goals, and live life free from anxiety and addiction.
Sessions often include humor and creativity while Sovann (pronounced sew-von) seeks to create a safe environment, listening carefully to clients’ concerns. Practical homework assignments and experiments designed for each unique situation help spur and reinforce growth and change. Some important themes he explores with clients are: loving God and others, living with authenticity, character formation (courage, integrity, fidelity, etc.), communicating with grace and truth, showing empathy, developing emotional intelligence, and wrestling with the challenges of leadership.
Sovann enjoys working with singles as well as couples in order to help families grow emotionally healthy relationships. He is fascinated with both the art and science of counseling, working with a wide range of ages and personalities – from teens to seniors, creatives to engineers. Having a degree in Pastoral Studies, he also desires to help fellow counselors, pastors, and their families balance the demands of work and family life.
He uses an eclectic approach to counseling, emphasizing cognitive behavioral therapy for mood disorders and insomnia, narrative and existential therapy for personal discovery & growth, and solution-focused counseling along with motivational interviewing for developing life skills and promoting change.
